Switzerland: crude oil and fuel imports since 2012

Switzerland is not an EU member state: its figures are never part of an EU total, share or ranking.

Counted by country of origin, as the country's customs statistics record it, for crude oil and refined products alike.

Figures from Federal Office for Customs and Border Security FOCBS are shown as published. Shares, sums, tonnes and euro values are our own calculation (Fuel Origin), not figures from Federal Office for Customs and Border Security FOCBS. Method: tonnes = kilograms divided by one thousand; euros = Swiss francs divided by the month's mean ECB euro reference rate; a share = one partner's tonnes divided by the sum of every row published for the month. How this figure is made

Provisional: January 2026, February 2026, March 2026, April 2026, May 2026, June 2026, July 2026, August 2026. These months are subject to change until the annual closing in June (Federal Office for Customs and Border Security FOCBS).

Partner = country of origin as recorded by the customs declarations; goods from EU countries may be declared by country of dispatch when their origin is not known.

In 2023, Switzerland imported 2.7 million tonnes of crude oil, most from the United States (54%), Nigeria (32%) and Algeria (7%). Its refined-product imports were 5.8 million tonnes, most from Germany (62%), the Netherlands (14%) and France (10%).

How this figure is made

Counted by country of origin, as the country's customs statistics record it, for crude oil and refined products alike.

Yearly figures are the sum of the published monthly tonnes over the months with a published figure; shares are each origin’s tonnes over that sum. A month that is not published is left out and listed, never counted as zero, and a month counts as “reported none” only where the zero is confirmed. The part of the published totals the publisher did not attribute to a country is shown as “cannot be traced”. Refined products are seven product families (road diesel, petrol, jet fuel, heating and other gasoil, fuel oil, naphtha, LPG); other products such as bitumen and lubricants are not included.

The chart draws each month’s shares as a 3-month average over the months with figures in each window. A month that is not published is a hatched band labelled “Not published”, and a confirmed zero a plain band labelled “No imports reported”; neither is ever filled in or averaged over.
