What is in the price of a litre of diesel in the EU?
In the week of 21 Sep 2026, a litre of diesel cost between €1.21 in Malta and €2.58 in the Netherlands, tax included. Tax was between 25% (Sweden) and 54% (Malta) of the pump price, and more than half of it in one of the 27 countries.

Pump prices with and without taxes as the European Commission publishes them each week in the Weekly Oil Bulletin. The tax share is our arithmetic: the pump price minus the price before tax, as a share of the pump price. A country whose latest price is for another week says so beside the price.
The middle price of the 27 countries was €2.11 a litre (a median of national prices, not an average weighted by sales).
The crude in a litre, which we take as Brent converted to euro per litre, cost €0.63 that week, 4.5 cents less than the week before. We use the same crude cost for every country.

What a litre of diesel is made of
CalculatedWhat is left of the pre-tax price after the crude (refining, transport, storage, retail margins, biofuel blending and anything else, which we do not break down) was between €0.54 (Slovakia) and €0.94 (Netherlands) a litre.
The pre-tax price was below the crude cost that week in Malta (by €0.08); the remainder is shown as negative, not as zero.

Tax is the pump price minus the price before tax, both published. The crude part is the Brent price converted to euro per litre with the European Central Bank reference rate (Brent (EIA) USD/bbl, ECB EUR/USD reference rate of the same day, divided by 158.987294928 L/bbl (definitional, no density). Mean of 2 quote day(s) in 2026-09-21 to 2026-09-22. Refinery yield factor 1.0 and NOT modelled.). Everything else is the price before tax minus the crude part: refining, transport, storage, retail margins, biofuel blending and anything else. We do not break it down, because the product benchmarks, wholesale prices and freight rates that would do so are not licensed for us to show.
In nine countries the published tax rates and prices do not add up exactly this week; the country page shows the gap instead of hiding it.
