Fuel Origin

Compare countries

Where each country’s fuel comes from, how much of its crude may have passed through the Strait of Hormuz, its emergency stocks and its pump price, side by side. Every figure is the one on that country’s own page, and names its month.

Where the jet fuel comes from

Estimated

Crude figures are for June 2026 unless a row names another month. Pump prices are for the week of 21 Sep 2026.

Austria (July 2026) has a different latest month from the others (June 2026).

For each country: the largest crude origins behind its jet fuel, the share that cannot be traced, the share that may have passed through the Strait of Hormuz, and the latest pump price.

How this figure is made

The crude behind the fuel is each country page’s headline estimate, one country back: where the fuel sold in the country came from, and where the crude behind it was produced. It is not a share of crude imports. The pump price is the latest weekly price including tax from the European Commission Weekly Oil Bulletin.

How this figure is made

Shares of each country’s crude oil imports by the country where the oil was produced (energy basis), for its latest published month: the same figures as the crude section of its country page. Every bar is 100% of that country’s crude imports; the six largest origins are named, the rest is “Other origins”, and the part the publisher did not attribute to a country is hatched.

Strait of Hormuz, month by month

Calculated

Upper bound of the share of crude imports that may have passed through the Strait of Hormuz, monthly, over the last three years. This is crude imports, not the crude behind the fuel in the table above.

Austria (July 2026) has a different latest month from the others (June 2026).

Method
How this figure is made

For each month, the share of the country’s crude imports whose origin exports through the Strait of Hormuz, from cited export-route reference data. Some exporters can ship either through the strait or around it, and cargo routing is not public, so the figure is a range; the line follows its upper end (a single figure where every origin has one export route). The range itself is on each country page. Each line ends at the month its country page’s crude section uses, and a month with no figure is a break, never a zero. This is crude imports; the headline table above is the crude behind the fuel, a different measure.

How this figure is made

Days of cover is Eurostat’s published figure under Directive 2009/119/EC, in whole days, never recomputed; member states may use different calculation methods (listed on each country page). The comparison with the 12-month average is our arithmetic on the published monthly stocks.

Pump price and tax

How this figure is made

The pump price and the price before tax are the European Commission Weekly Oil Bulletin’s published figures. Tax is their difference (VAT, excise and other specific taxes together) and the tax share is that difference as a share of the pump price: our arithmetic on the two published prices. The breakdown into VAT and excise, with the rates in force, is on each country’s pump-price page.
