Counted by the country the cargo was shipped from, as customs record it. Transit hubs such as the Netherlands therefore appear as sources; for crude oil, the default view counts by the country of production instead.
In 2020, Italy imported 49.9 million tonnes of crude oil, most from Azerbaijan (20%), Iraq (17%) and Saudi Arabia (13%). Its refined-product imports were 14.0 million tonnes, most from Russia (24%), Saudi Arabia (18%) and Algeria (9%).
